PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR The City of The
Director will have an optimistic outlook, a sense of humor, and be committed

honesty and high ethics. Excellent oral and written communication skills are
important. Demonstration of a successful history of creating and maintaining
positive working relationships with the public and employees is highly
desirable. Knowledge of regional and municipal public works standards,
practices and legal/regulatory frameworks is highly valued. Six years
of increasingly responsible public works administration including management
and administrative responsibility is required. Bachelor’s degree in Civil
Engineering, Business Administration or a related field is preferred. Valid
registration as a Professional Civil Engineer is highly desirable.

MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST APPRENTICE Description of position: Multnomah County is seeking applicants for a full-time Road Maintenance Specialist Apprentice. The Maintenance Specialist Apprentice will learn to perform a variety of manual labor tasks and job duties through a 6-month to one-year training program designed to prepare the employee for a career as a Maintenance Specialist 1. Apprentices are expected to learn and be able to demonstrate a core set of skills in safe hand and power tool operation, equipment operation, and earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake, tanker and combination vehicle endorsements within one year of hire. After successful completion of the training program, including obtaining the CDL with required endorsements, apprentices will be appointed to the Maintenance Specialist 1 classification and will serve a one-year probationary period. The hourly wage increases to $17.73 after successful completion of the training program. Candidates will learn to perform a variety of road maintenance tasks which include street cleaning; sanding and clearing of roadways; transporting materials; towing equipment; applying pavement treatments; maintaining drainage systems; vegetation management; right-of-way and shoulder maintenance; and a wide range of other diverse activities which includes emergency operations. All positions require teamwork and the ability to perform strenuous manual labor outdoors during all kinds of weather extremes such as heat, cold, rain, storms, snow, floods, etc. Work shifts will be 5/8s or seasonal 4/10s & 9/80s with start times as early as 6 AM. While employees will have regular work schedules, they may also be expected to report to work at all hours of the day, night, holiday or week-end in the event of emergencies requiring road, bridge, or traffic maintenance. New apprentices must gain a CDL permit within three days of hire. Applicants who do not currently hold a CDL are strongly encouraged to begin the process for obtaining one.
