Operations Superintendent – Water City of Vancouver, Washington Closes 5/25/2012 @ 11:59 p.m. As the result of a retirement the City of Vancouver, Washington is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Operations Superintendent - Water in the Operations and Maintenance Division of the City's Public Works Department. The Operations and Maintenance division is responsible for maintenance of the city's infrastructure (water, wastewater, storm water, streets, trails, parks, grounds and fleet). The division employs 175 staff including six (6) person management team. The individual selected as the Water Superintendent will assume management and supervisory responsibility for the staff, budget and infrastructure of the City's Water production, quality and distribution maintenance work groups as well as the Operation's Warehouse. The Water Superintendent is responsible for operations and maintenance of the fourth largest water utility in the state providing drinking water to 200,000 residents. The water groups have 45 staff, an annual budget of $9.8 million, and a customer satisfaction rating of 97%. The incumbent is retiring in early September 2012, and it is the goal to have the successful candidate start work four to six weeks prior to provide a smooth transition. The Operations Superintendent reports to the Operations Manager; directs the work of four work groups; and participates as a member of the Operations and Maintenance management team. The position of Operations Superintendent is a regular, full-time, non-union position, and is exempt from overtime. Water Production: The Water Production work group consists of ten staff including the supervisor and two electricians. Annual water production is around nine billion gallons of water. Water production facilities include 40 wells, nine well fields, 53 booster pumps, five elevated water towers, and 5 ground level water reservoirs. In addition to adding chlorine and fluoride at each production facility, the work group operates air stripping towers at three water stations and greensand filters at two water stations. Water Distribution: The Water Distribution work groups consist of 26 staff including two supervisors. The maintain over 69,000 meters and services; 1,000 miles of pipe; 7,000 hydrants; and 12,000 valves in six pressure zones. The work group typically does small pipe replacement projects in house. The City's unaccounted for water is 4.2% Water Quality: The Water Quality work group consists of three staff who manage the 13,000 back flow prevention devices within the utility. In addition, they take approximately 2,300 water quality samples annually. Warehouse: The Warehouse work group consists of five staff including the supervisor responsible for the warehousing and distribution of materials as well as most purchasing and bill paying for Operations. They maintain an on-hand inventory of 1,000 types of materials valued at $700,000 and provide materials to all Operations work groups.
